Types of UPVC Door Handles
If your upvc door handle requires replacement, it is essential to choose the correct replacement for your home. A locksmith can supply and fit high-security uPVC handles that come with additional security features.
The most important measurements are measurement A (known as PZ) and the length of the backplate (measurement F). Make sure to check these measurements to ensure your new uPVC handles will fit.
Lever/Lever
A lever is a rigid rod that pivots around the point. When you apply a force to the end of the lever it is likely to cause it to turn the fulcrum in the direction of the applied force. This rotation multiplies the applied force which allows you to lift or move something that would require a greater amount of force if you attempted to apply it directly to the load.

The distance between the fulcrum and the place where you apply the force determines how far the lever is able to move. This is known as the mechanical advantage. The mechanical advantage increases when the lever is extended. You can determine the mechanical advantage by dividing the distance from the fulcrum to the point where you are applying the force by the distance between the fulcrum and where you will end the lever.
Levers can also have a variety of effects based on the way in which forces are applied. For example, a class 2 lever has a tendency to turn in the opposite direction when the force applied to it (like a totter-totter). The forces generated by pushing on the handle of a front door can create rotational effects similar to these.
However, levers don't create energy. They multiply the force by making small amounts of effort applied over a longer distance into greater amounts of force applied over smaller distances. Levers are used to lift heavy objects and transport massive quantities of cargo. The lever principle is employed in everyday tools such as crowbars. hammer claws fishing rods, hammer claws and even your own legs, as you are standing on the hand brake of your car.
Lever/Pad
Lever pad handles, also known as upvc door handles, have levers on each side to operate the multipoint locks. These come in many variations and finishes, and can be used with a variety of materials like UPVC, Aluminium & Timber doors. They are sold in pairs for the inner and outer door with spindles & screws included. They are also available in hand and unhandled versions for different users.
These are often used for new builds and can be used to replace the existing upvc doors. The levers are lifted to open the multipoint locks and the key is turned to close or unlock the door. They provide a bit more security than the standard lever handles for doors, as the locking can only be done through the inside with keys.
They are not as secure as a cylinder bolt, but are an affordable alternative to add security. The only drawback is that they don't offer the same level of protection as a cylinder lock and they don't restrict access to your home if the door is left open.
The majority of the lever pad door handles made of upvc that we have in stock are manufactured by the leading manufacturers in the industry, and are made from high quality components. In general, they come with a manufacturer's guarantee.
They usually are designed to work with the 92mm lock, or a replacement version called the Paddock Lock. They will have a 92mm cylinder centre on the inside and 62mm on the outside and be equipped with two spindle followers. Some are supplied with the backplate inserted, while others can be removed to accommodate different fixing centers.
Lever/Snib
Lever latches, the simplest of door handles are commonly used. The lever is pushed downwards to open a latch inside the door, which can be locked using keys. The levers for privacy are using the same principle however, with the addition of the lock snib (like the doorknob).
A snib button is very useful, especially for homes where it's crucial to maintain privacy or security. You can use the snib button to block your partner from entering until they are prepared. This type of handle can also be used on interior doors such as those in bedrooms where you wish to restrict outside access.
Snib buttons can cause issues in certain situations, particularly when you have old locks and warped doors. If the snib is used in a mistake or by a person who isn't accustomed to it, the door may close and lock you out. Most of the time, you can be able to get in by knocking the door frame or letterbox, however this isn't the best option.
If your uPVC has a snib, we recommend replacing it with a smart lock from the E-LOK 7 Series. They can be retrofitted to double turn pull handle kits and come with cover plates to hide existing holes to ensure a seamless installation. The E-LOK app can be used to open doors using RFID cards or a mechanical key. Passcodes are also available for convenience and security. The system is tested to 200 000 cycles to ensure long-term durability. The handles themselves are constructed with a solid-metal construction and are BS EN 1670:2007 Grade 5 for resistance to corrosion.
Lever/Moveable Pad
This is a popular handle design for front doors. It comes with the benefit of preventing the door from being opened from outside without keys if the lock is not deadlocked. This is accomplished by an external 'pad' handle which locks in the gap between the handles and the lock case to prevent the latch from being withdrawn or the door being opened.
This type of handle is made for uPVC doors that are fitted with multipoint locks which operate via a split spindle operation. This kind of operation requires that the internal lever handle and external pad handle are both fitted to the same lock case. This can be a simple change from the current uPVC handles, but it might also require changing the lock case or a new set of handle furniture to allow for this additional functionality.
